Volunteers with Special Needs Want to Help

handicap

VMC welcomed 2013 with an influx of new volunteers and new opportunities.  Among these volunteers are more and more individuals with special needs. Although we have been able to make a few placements, we realized very quickly that we had to increase our database of agencies willing and able to accommodate volunteers with disabilities.

This is where we need your help.  We are asking you to evaluate your volunteer needs and consider opportunities that might be appropriate for individuals or groups with disabilities.  Every opportunity and volunteer will be considered individually.  In many cases, depending upon the disability, the volunteer will be accompanied by a supervisor or counselor.

Please let us know if your agency is interested in participating in this effort.  Better yet, if you have an appropriate opportunity, click in the yellow box to the right that says Agencies: Looking for volunteers?  Please be sure to check the box saying that your opportunity is suitable for special needs volunteers.

Many thanks for helping VMC organize what we hope to be a valuable and life-changing experience for both volunteers and agencies.  We look forward to finding the right volunteer match for all our volunteers!

Our Thanks as Hurricane Sandy Relief continues...

Thank you to all the volunteers – individuals, families, company teams and youth groups – who have reached out to be connected to the needs of our communities in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Thank you to all the agencies and their dedicated staff who are caring for those in need at this time, providing food and shelter, clearing away damages, offering child care, collecting warm clothing, and giving a shoulder to lean on for a while.

For those interested in volunteering in any of the Hurricane Sandy clean-up activities, the Governor’s Office on Volunteerism is manning an emergency response hotline at 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397).  Backup hotline numbers are 609-775-5236 or 908-303-0471. Connect to the heart of volunteerism through VMC

Your gift helps us...

Comfort a homebound senior.  For 20 years and counting, our Friendship at Heart volunteers bring much needed companionship to our elderly with frequent visits and phone calls.

Encourage a young student to give back to the community.  Students from grade school through college are sorting and distributing at food banks, cleaning up rivers and parks, tutoring young and old, assisting in animal shelters, and so much more. VMC’s comprehensive Youth Directory is a vital resource to parents, schools, youth organizations, and scouting groups. Our group placement advisor adds that personal touch to make perfect matches!

Connect local nonprofits so they can share knowledge, better business practices, useful tools and services. Their shared successes, challenges, and needs bring improved community cooperation and collaboration.

Teach nonprofit board leadership—from policy implementation and roles and responsibilities to fiscal planning and fund raising—so agencies are better prepared to face the 21st century.

Whatever your cause, your dollars go a long way at VMC

to help repair the world and build community.

Changing Nonprofits - Are You the Missing Link?

VMC works to change the way non-profits do business through our CHAIN program, that links charities serving similar causes. The CHAIN program helps nonprofits maximize their resources (especially skilled and leadership volunteers) and minimize their expenses.

Our Healthy Living and Women's Health and Safety CHAINs are up and running, and we are looking forward to building CHAINs for environmental groups, youth at risk, immigration, affordable childcare, hunger, homelessness, education alternatives...and more. Call or email us to find out how your company can sponsor the CHAIN of your choice.

National Volunteer Week brought out the best in New Jerseyans. In the words of Governor Chris Christie, "You have defined New Jersey as a community, one which--when faced with adversity--rolls up its sleeves, gets back to work, and in word and deed shows that it will never, ever give up.  With your help, New Jersey will rebuild stronger than ever."
